What is an escape room?

You wonder: what is an escape room? An escape room is an adventure where you have to solve different puzzles as a group. You are given 60 minutes to do this. In the first escape rooms, the goal was actually literally to escape from a room. Meanwhile, there are different stories, where you have to solve a murder or crack a safe, for example. You enter the escape room together with friends or family. At Backspace, we have different escape rooms for groups of 2-6 people, 6-13 people (in 2 teams against each other) and 7 to 24 people. We have also created special escape rooms for familieschildren or companies and other (sports) teams.

Puzzles escape room

What is a puzzle? The puzzles in an escape room are all different. At Backspace, we find it important that the puzzles fit well with the theme and that you can solve the puzzles in different ways each time. For example, there are puzzles you have to solve by using objects you find in the room. Other puzzles require different senses, or practical insight and creativity.

As you solve a puzzle, you get further and further into the story. For example, doors open, there are special effects or drawers open with new objects that allow you to solve another puzzle. You will not find any maths puzzles or puzzles that require you to be strong, agile or fast. This allows everyone to play an escape room, young and old.

Of course, sometimes you can get stuck in a puzzle. Our game masters pay close attention to how far into the game you are, and if necessary, they will help you further at the right moment with a good hint. This will make you look at a puzzle differently and come up with a new solution yourself.

Themes escape rooms

An escape room usually has a certain theme. The rooms are completely decorated in this theme. All the furniture and objects are adapted to it. This makes you feel as if you are really in another world. With us, for instance, you are in the Orient Express. You stand on a platform and see the outside of the train. On the train, you walk through a dining car. Or if you choose our Sherlock Holmes escape room, you walk through an English cottage. You start on the outside of a beautiful brick house. Inside, everything is in style: a floral chair, a big rug and matching wallpaper. The sound and lighting effects are also tailored to the world you're in. So we make sure you can get totally immersed in it together.

Playing together

You may be used to playing games against others. In an escape room, this is very different. Instead, you play together. To escape, it is important that you work together, communicate well, think logically and creatively and stay focused. That way, together with your group, you will be able to solve the puzzles. Sometimes you can also only solve a puzzle together with someone else, because you have to do something in two places at the same time, for example.
